Day One of Rocket League's Esports World Cup is in the books. The headline results: TSM beat defending RLCS World Champion NRG 3-1, and Ninjas in Pyjamas beat Shopify Rebellion 3-1. In Group B, defending EWC champion Karmine Corp opened with a sweep, while Spacestation survived the tightest series of the day.
The tournament runs August 12-16 at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles. Sixteen teams are competing for a $1 million prize pool, including $400,000 for first place, before the RLCS season closes at Worlds in Fort Worth next month.
Group A: TSM and NiP flip the expected script
TSM's 3-1 win over NRG is the result everyone will be talking about. NRG entered as the defending World Champion and North America's top seed; TSM are APAC's sole representative at Worlds. TSM took the first two games 3-0 and 3-1, NRG answered in Game 3, and TSM closed the series with a 2-1 overtime win.
The other North American loss was just as notable. Ninjas in Pyjamas beat Shopify Rebellion 3-1, opening with 4-1 and 1-0 wins before Shopify responded in Game 3. NiP then took the decider 1-0 in a 5:46 overtime. That puts two of Group A's strongest pre-event NA sides straight into the lower bracket.
The two remaining Group A upper-bracket winners were less surprising, but neither series was simple:
- Twisted Minds 3-1 FUT Esports — FUT took Game 1, then Twisted Minds won three straight, including overtime wins in Games 2 and 4.
- Team Vitality 3-1 FURIA — the first three games all went to overtime before Vitality finished the job in Game 4.
Tomorrow's Group A upper-bracket finals are Twisted Minds vs Ninjas in Pyjamas and Team Vitality vs TSM. The lower bracket waits for FUT-Shopify and FURIA-NRG on August 14, with those series played best-of-seven.
Group B: KC sweep, Spacestation survive
Karmine Corp began the title defense exactly how a favorite should: 3-0 over Wildcard. The scoreline was clean, but not every map was: Wildcard pushed Game 2 to a 3-2 finish before KC took Game 3 1-0 to complete the sweep.
Team Falcons handled the MENA derby, beating R8 Esports 3-1. The first game needed 2:59 of overtime, R8 took Game 3 to keep the series alive, and Falcons answered with a 5-1 finish in Game 4.
Gentle Mates delivered the most one-sided result of the day: a 3-0 sweep of Five Fears by scores of 5-0, 7-0, and 4-0. Then came the thriller. Spacestation Gaming beat MIBR.LOS 3-2 in a five-game series that contained three overtime maps. SSG won Games 1 and 2, MIBR fought back to level the series, and Spacestation took Game 5 3-2 in a 2:41 overtime.
That sets Thursday's Group B upper-bracket finals:
- Karmine Corp vs Spacestation Gaming
- Team Falcons vs Gentle Mates
Wildcard-MIBR.LOS and R8-Five Fears move to the lower bracket. Both are now elimination series.
Why Day One matters
The EWC Group Stage uses two eight-team GSL-style brackets. Four teams from each group reach the August 15-16 single-elimination playoffs, but an opening loss means the path gets much narrower. Upper-bracket series are best-of-five; lower-bracket series are best-of-seven.
The immediate picture is clear. Karmine Corp, Falcons, Gentle Mates, Spacestation, Twisted Minds, Vitality, TSM, and NiP are one win away from securing a playoff berth. NRG and Shopify have work to do, and the lower bracket is already carrying more pressure than it should on the event's first day.
