The World Championship started by cutting its field from 20 teams to 16. Team Falcons, Virtus.pro, FUT Esports, and Bigodes survived the September 15 Play-In and advanced to the Group Stage. R8 Esports, Mate y Tapa, Five Fears, and TSM saw their 3v3 seasons end on the opening day.
The format was simple enough to explain and cruel enough to matter: eight teams, every series best-of-five, two wins to advance, two losses to go home. Falcons and Virtus.pro took the direct 2-0 route. FUT and Bigodes recovered after opening losses. Here is how all ten series unfolded.
Virtus.pro make the cleanest start
Virtus.pro opened Worlds with a 3-0 sweep of Bigodes. 2Piece, Tawk, and Wahvey won the games 4-0, 4-1, and 4-2, steadily increasing the pressure while never giving the South American LCQ winner a foothold in the series.
Mate y Tapa matched the sweep on the alternate stream, beating Five Fears 3-0 by scores of 6-2, 3-1, and 4-1. It was a decisive first step for the European LCQ winner and an immediate drop into the elimination side for Sub-Saharan Africa's representative.
The two winners met with a Group Stage place available. Mate y Tapa took Game 1 1-0, but Virtus.pro responded with three straight: 2-0, 2-1 in 1:36 of overtime, and 1-0. The 3-1 series win made VP the first team through and completed a 6-1 opening-day game record.
Falcons recover, then close
The newest international champions did not begin with a sweep. FUT Esports took Game 1 against Team Falcons 3-1. Falcons' response was emphatic: 4-0, 4-1, and 6-1 in the next three games for a 3-1 series win.
On the other side of that upper path, R8 Esports beat TSM 3-2. TSM won Games 1 and 4, forcing the first deciding game of Worlds. R8 removed the suspense with a 6-1 Game 5, moving into an all-MENA qualification series against Falcons.
Falcons won that meeting 3-1. They took the first two games 1-0 and 2-0, R8 answered 4-3 in Game 3, and Falcons finished the series with another 1-0 win after 1:07 of overtime. Rw9, Kiileerrz, and dralii advanced 2-0 in series and 6-2 in games. The Play-In seed always looked strange next to their EWC title; they made sure it lasted only one day.
Bigodes take the longest possible road
Bigodes entered the lower side after winning zero games against Virtus.pro. Their first elimination series was much tighter than the final score suggests. They beat Five Fears 3-1, but two wins required overtime: Game 1 ended 3-2 after 12 seconds, and Game 4 ended 2-1 after 2:02.
That sent Five Fears out at 0-2 and gave Bigodes one final chance against R8. Bigodes won the opener 6-1 before R8 took Games 2 and 3 to move within one win of groups. With their season on the line, DRUFINHO, Bemmz, and nxghtt won Game 4 4-2 and the decider 2-1. The 3-2 comeback completed the full lower route and put South America's third seed into the last 16.
R8's exit is the sharp edge of this format. They beat TSM, took a game from Falcons, and led their final series 2-1. None of that was enough to earn a second day.
FUT turn one loss into two wins
FUT's recovery began against TSM. They won Game 1 4-1, dropped Game 2 3-1, then took the next two 4-0 and 6-5 for a 3-1 series victory. TSM left Fort Worth without a series win after forcing R8 to Game 5 and taking one game from FUT.
Mate y Tapa waited in the decider after losing to Virtus.pro, and the 3-0 FUT sweep was far closer than those numbers look. The first game ended 3-2 after 1:51 of overtime. The second ended 4-3 after another 1:39. FUT finally created separation with a 4-1 Game 3.
Chronic, CHEESE., and jstn. therefore advanced after losing their opening match, winning six of their final seven games. For jstn., the result extends a comeback season that already included a North American LCQ win. For the roster as a whole, it turns the last available NA qualification place into a spot in the World Championship Group Stage.

The first final placements
R8 Esports and Mate y Tapa finish 17th-18th and receive $9,000 each. Five Fears and TSM finish 19th-20th and receive $6,000 each. Those are the first locked placements from the $1.2 million 3v3 prize pool.
Virtus.pro, Falcons, FUT, and Bigodes join the 12 teams that qualified directly to the Group Stage. Four groups of four now play a single round robin across September 16-17, with the top three in each group moving into the hybrid-elimination playoffs:

The assignments set up an EWC Grand Final rematch between Falcons and Spacestation later in Group A, while FUT join Twisted Minds, NiP, and FURIA in Group B. Bigodes land beside the defending World Champions in Group C. Virtus.pro's reward for the day's cleanest Play-In record is a group led by Boston Major winner Gentle Mates and Team Vitality.
Opening day did answer the first real question of Worlds 2026. Falcons looked like the international champion their seed failed to advertise. Virtus.pro barely allowed anyone to score. FUT and Bigodes proved an opening loss did not have to become an exit. Four seasons continue tomorrow; four ended before the arena doors ever open.
